In connection with the proposed extension of the council's electrical development plant, the engineer (Mr W. H. Cook) wrote stating that owing to t'fle amount of work he had in hand in connection with the ordinary undertakings of the council, he was reluctantly compelled to decline the council's request b K at lie should report on the civil engineering work in connection with the scheme. This, he regretted, as he regarded tlje matter of a highly interesting character. It was decided to deleto the motion in the report of the committee authorising Mr Cook to make the report required, and to engage the services of an outside engineer. GENERAL. The Borough Inspector wrote suggesting that heavy motor traffic should bo prohibited from using Devon street. — It was pointed out that the council had no power to prohibit such traffic. W. T. Jennings, M.P., wrote asking permission, on behalf of the committee of the Irish Red Cross Day, to erect a platform in Devon street on September 21, for the purpose of dancing in connection with the effort.—lt was decided to grant the permission subject to the approval of the inspector. The Waitara Borough Council wrote asking the council to consent to its sanitary inspector acting for them in that capacity, to the extent of about one half-day's services a week, while their inspector was away on active service. It was pointed out that the work could be done on the inspector's half-holiday, and Mr Day suggested that he might be left free to go out there on any (not essarily his half holiday) so as to •suit his work in New Plymouth, and that at Waitara. The council expressed its willingness to render what assistance possible to a local body in such a difficulty, but decided to point out to tho Waitara council that the inspector could possibly serve them better by giving one whole day a month;, than a half-day week, and to a«k if such an arrangement would be ac-
