THE EMPIRE. LAST NIGHT OF NORMA TALMADGE IN "THE LAW OF COMPENSATION." The Selznick select feature, "The Law of Compensation," was introducd to a good audience at the Empire last night with an old favorite in the person of Norma Talmadge in the leading role. Miss Tnhnadge has never appeared to better advantage than in this picture, for fhe plays her part sympathetically find sincerely. The tale has a big heartinterest all the way, and besides this it has the advantage of being happily set. The heroine is a school-girl at the end of her last term. She leaves the college, and goes homo to her doting father. But soon she is in love, ai;d her sweetheart is to leave that town, so he asks her to accompany him as his wife. She and her father" agree, and a year or so later she is shown as a very happy vife and mother. She becomes acquainted with a professional dancer, who induces the happy wife to join the stage. The woman so bombards her with flattery that she is sure she can soon become a star, and the home is very nearly broken up. But her old father comes down, and the scene changes as he talks to her. The old man tells her of her own mother, his wife. He says how her mother was led away in just such fashion, and tells in detail ail the consequences that came to her. This is all shown on the screen as in a vision, and makes a very effective interlude to the primary plot. Amongst the supports there is the serond episode of the Bushman-Bayne serial "The Great Secret," which bids fair to establish a record for popularity. To-night will be the final screening of this programme. EVERYBODY'S. COMMENCING TO-NIGHT. ■ "THE ENEMY WITHIN." One of the mo9t sensational film achievements yet screened in the Dominion will be shown for the first time at Everybody's to-night. It is released under the title o£ "The Enemy Within," and views the well-known champion boxer, Mr. Reg. L. ("Snowy") Baker, in some very fine athletic feats. Only too plain is it to see that the remarkable feats accredited to him are not the "tilt the camera" style. These things actually are performed. This is Australia's best all-round athlete's first appearance on the "silvery sheet," and if he sticks to it he will make just as great a success of the stage as he did of th& ling. The picture is not a war drama, but a thrilling story of internal plotting and treachery. No one but his "chief" knows the reason why Jack Airlie has returned to his beloved Australia. As a .Special Agent, it is Jack's duty to capture a certain spy and his .gangWhen out for a drive, Jack picks up a little girl who has been knocked down by a careless driver. He takes the child to her home, and there meets Brassels, one of the ringleaders of the gang he is out to disband. With the aid of a profe?"ionnl African tracker, whom he has trained to he a detective, Jack, after a srrippins fight with four men, is able to follow the man who is making his fine.l attempt to blow up the principal buildings and wharves in the rifv.
