Much sympathy will be felt for Mrs. M. E. Kendfljek, of T«Hd, -who has ny ceivei word of the death hi action of Jrti} son, Private E. J. Kendridk. B. Young, for some time ia business at Inglewood, was wotmded in the left hand by gunshot on August 29Mr. W. B. Montgomery, Comptroller of Customs, who has been in New Plymouth on inspection business, leaves for the south by the mail train this ing.

The many friends of Mr. and Mrs. N. T. Maunder will regret to learn that they have receieved word that their son Roger has ibeen killed in action in France.

Mr. I* M. Monteath has received a cable saying that his son,_ Private R. Monteath,' is m hospital at Walton-on-Thames, sufferjng from a gunshot wound in the right leg, but is progressing satisfactorily. Mrs. J. Lobb, Westown, has received word that hef son, E. J. Lobb, Westown, who left with the 30th Reinforcements, was admitted to hospital on September 5, suffering from a gunshot wound on the left hand.

Advice has been received that Lieu* tenant W. J, R. Hill, son of Mr. S Hil!, of Auckland, and late of New Plymouth, died of wounds on September 6. Recently he was reported to have been dangerously ill in hospital in France. Much sympathy will be felt by friends in this district for the relatives of tha late Lieutenant Hill.

At last night's meeting of the New Plymouth Borough Council, on the motion of the Mayor, a resolution wad passed expressing regret at -the dfcath of the late Mr. H. J. Okey, MP., and plao ing on record the council's appreciation of the thorough and painatafkmg services rendered 'by him in the interests of the district. The motion was carried in the customary manner.

On Saturday afternoon, Mr Trevor ft Simpson, who has be#n a member of Che literary staff of the [Herald for the past six and a-half years, -was presented with a solid leather suite as a. Mr. Simpson is being married this week, and leases New Plymouth to take up a position on the Auckland Herald. Mr Penn, in making the presentation, conveyed to the recipient the best wishes Of thtf Herald staff for his success in his new position and happiness in bis life.

The death occurred at his [ Aubrey Street, Hew Plynwath, on Saturday afternoon of Mr. George Barr, aged 76 years. The late Mr. Barr had re* sided in the North TaTfiaaki district for the past 36 years. "For some time he was farming at Puniho, and 16 fft, 17 years ago came to live in New Ply* mouth. He leaves a widow and family of three sons—Messrs Thomas Barr (New Plymouth), [Henry (Hawera), and George (Palmerston North), 18 grandchildren and five great-grandchildren. The funeral taies place at T8 Hemii Cemetery to-day. • f,
