BED CROSS APPEAL.
Stratford, Sept. 13. The campaign of the country commit.- j tee to secure donations for the Red Cross Society of £2O each and over was definitely launched last Wednesday, and 24 residents have already promised such donations. This represents over £SOO, and the committee confidently anticipate I further numerous responses during the next few days. The present offensive operations on the Western front must involve casualties among our boys, fori whom everything possible should be done' to minimise the horrors of war- There should be no stint in supporting such admirable work to alleviate the sufferings of those who fight for us. It is, surely, a privilege and a duty'to do whatever lies in our power to at least render comfort in return for such heroic service. GENERAL. There are many readers of these lines who will remember Jack M'Mahon, a well-known and popular identity here. In pre-war days Jack played football, and was a forward in the Stratford Club when they lined Opunake in the junior championspih. After dropping football, Tack took a keen interest in the Egmont Club, and for a tenn was president. Now his attention is given to subduing the Germans; but, unfortunately, he received a gunshot wound in the knee on August 21. His many friends will be pleased to find the genial Jack soon his old self again. Promoters of the Toko Road social have every reason to be satisfied with the results of Wednesday's entertainment, the takings beins in the neighborhood of £7, which will go to the country portion of the Copper Trail. Sonus contributed by Miss Sangster and Mr. Rae were much appreciated by all present. The music for the dance was supplied by the Cureen family, and was voted Al, whilst Messrs F. Clarke and j A. Zurchcr, as M.'sC., &pt things moving briskly throughout the evening.
Preparations in hand and contemplated indicate that the masquerade and fancy dress ball to be held at the Town Hal! on Thursday will prove a brilliant success. The electrical engineer (Mr. Hollands) and his staff will have the work of fitting up colored lights through, out the hall, Whiter the stage will receive other attention. The organiser (Mr J. S. Rowe) hopes .to make this function eclipse all previous efforts, and iudgins by the interest already shown, this should be accomplished. Lastly, it should be mentioned that this is in aid of the Red Cross funds, and will be conducted by the town committee for the Copper frail. The general committee of the A and P- Association meet to-morrow (Saturday), at 1.30 p.m.
I have to acknowledge an invitation to the Returned Soldiers' Association's plain and fancy drcs; ball in the Town Hall on the ■2<Uh"inst. The committee •ire renkin? elnborate preparations to secure the comfort of patrons.
There are plenty of folks who appreciate nice pictures in the home. To those on the look-out for illuminations fit to grace anv walls, we can recommend a call at C E. James' Warehouse. Here one can get trie pictures in all "''apes and sizes, framed and unframed, on the premises. Mr. James is M«o of'prin? great values in ladies' handbags, etc.— Advt.
