LIFE-SAVING SOCIETY.

MEETING OF COMMITTEE A meeting of the committee of 'ihe Taranaki Head Centre of the Royal Live-saving Society was held last night. Mr. D. J. Hughes (president) occupied the chair, and there were also present: Misses E. and N. White, I- Gardiner, and Messrs J. Bennett, (N. Ohristiansen, E. L. M'llroy, S. G- Smith, J. Corrigal, and the secretary (Mr. P. A. Mathcson). Mr. 1) J. Hughes was elected chairman of the executive and* Mr. J. Bennett deputy-chairman. Other officials were appointed as fol-low.—-Hon, surgeons, Drs. Wade, Blackley, and Leatham; hon. examiners, those appointed last year, and Mr. Osborne (New Plymouth Boys' High School), Miss Saxton (Chetwode ' School); hon. • instructors, as appointed last year, and ' Messrs N. Day, E. Bary, M"Kay, OSr\ borne, and Miss'Saxton.

The following were elected new mem'- ■> hers:—Messrs 0. J. Howarth, H. J. Eaves, J. S. Fox, and L. Callaghan. Mr, Howarth was appointed to the executive committee. '. Mr. Watkins was nominated as the centre's representative on the Dominion executive. ~ .Donations were received and acknowledged from the Waitara Life-saving Club, the Mayor of New Plymouth (Mr. C. H. Burgess), Dr. W- R* Wade, find Messrs H. A. Stratford, W. C Weston, '■ and F. N. Whiteomfoe. Messrs C. H. Burgess and W. C. Wes- : ton also wrote acknowledging their appointment as vice-presidents of the so- ■ ciety. Correspondence was received from the Ohristehureh Centre dealing at length with proposed new methods for the promotion of warmth in life-saving drill, and stating that a detailed report Was being prepared of a conference held with the hon. surgeon of the centre on the above matter.

The question of housing the life-sat-ing reel at the East End Beach was referred to Messrs Christiansen, and •Smith to attend to. The chairman then mentioned that, there were no facilities for life-saving at" the Ngamotu Beach, and he did not think it right that thousands of people should toe allowed to congregate there at holiday times without means being, provided for rendering assistance in' cases (j accident. It was pointed out' that efforts had been made previously to have a reel stationed there, but the Ngainotu Committee had practically toldi the society to take it away, and would 1 not take care of it.

The chairman said he thought the 1 society would te failing in its £uty if it did not insist on something tteiag done in that direction. Eventually, the matter was left in tne hands of the chairman to attend to.

Messrs M'llroy and Bennett were appointed to go into the matter of ways • and means for a systematic canvass of the town, in order to increase the membership of the society.

Mr. 'N. K. M'Diarmid wrote resigning from membership in the society. The resignation was accepted with jegret. Accounts amounting to £8 7s fid were 1 ; passed.for payment.
