A London telegram states that Sir George Raid's condition js -unchanged. Lieut. C. H. Drew, R.AF., of New Plymouth, now on active service, was recently promoted to the rank of captain.

Commander N. R. De la Cour Cornwall, R.N.R., of New Plymouth, has been promoted to the rank of Acting-Captain. Mr. H. S. Watson (ICoru) has received advice that his son (Rifleman George T. Watson) was -wounded and admitted to hospital on August 30.

The Education Board yesterday passed a resolution of sympathy with Mr. H. J. Okey, M.P., in his serious illness, with an expression of hope for a complete recovery.

Mr. C. Longstaff, of King Road, Moa, yesterday received advice that his son (Truby Longstaff) had been admitted to hospital in France, wounded in the left elbow.

At the Education Board meeting yesterday the following appointments to school committees were confirmed: Mere Mere, Mr. John Anderson (vice Mr. Bissett); Tahora, Mr. John Harrison (vice Mr. H.J.Ryan).

Advice was received on Tuesday evening that Private Douglas Mace, of Omata, who left with the 35th Reinforcements, has been killed in action. Mr. Cyril Bellringer, who left with the 46th Reinforcements yesterday, was on Tuesday presented with a set of military hair brushes and case by the staff of Messrs. Bellringer Bros.

Mr. Arthur Morton, of Egmont Village, lias received word that his aon (Jack) has been -wounded and admitted to hospital.

Mrs. Tolme, Fitzroy, lias received word that her son, Private D. Tolme, has been wounded, and is dangerously ill. On inquiry at the hospital early this morning, the medical superintendent (Dr K A. Walker) informed us that the condition of Mr. H. J. Okey, M.P., showed no improvement, and was very gravis.

Captain Rex Brewster, N.Z.M.C., of New Plymouth, was awarded the Military Cross for having attended to the wounded fcr a whole day under heavy shell fire, and setting a sp'lendid example to all ranks by devotion and contempt of danger. '

At yesterday's meeting of the Taranaki Education Board the resignation of Mr. G. A: Knight from his seat as a representative of the North Ward on the board was accepted with regret. The election to fill .the vacancy-will take place on October 21.

The resignation of Mrs. Tobin as assistant at Warea was accepted by the Education Board at its meeting yesterday, she having been appointed to the Mokoia School. The following teachers were granted leave of absence: Mr. D. Henderson (Hawera), 4 days; Mr. Innes (Okaiawa), one month; and Miss D. Henderson (Kapuni), one month.

Mr. Arthur Ambury received word yesterday that his son (Private Roy J. Ambury) was killed in action on August 30. Prior to his enlistment Private Amburv was in the ministry of the Baptist Church, and for a time was stationed at Wanganui East. At the time of leaving for camp he was supplying the pulpit of the Bulls Presbyterian Church. He is the last of Mr. Ambury's four sons, and left for the front about a year ago. Mrs. R. J. Ambury luV3 been living in New Plymouth since her husband left the Dominion.

The latest hospital report contains the names of the following Taranaki men.— Dangerously ill: Lieut. H. B. Grave (New Plymouth), D. Tolme (Fitzroy). Still dangerously ill: Lance-Corporal 0. Robertson (Hawera). Seriously ill: C. A. Pease (Mangatoki). Not severe cases: R. C. Bishell (Inglewood), A. A. Cote (Toko), W. H. Chadwick (Hawera), C. A. Gleeson, W. F. Herdman, and C. R. McKay (New Plymouth), W. Hick (Urenui), A. J. Hook (Tawa Flat), W. H. Johnson, D. Kendrick and W. Rogers (Stratford), W. Johnston (Normanby), A. G. Jones (Kaupokonui), M. Kelly (Warea), T. Potroz (Kaimata), and S W. W. Shirley (Oaonui). Major F. D. Holdsworth, who for two years past has been in charge of the postal branch of the New Zealand Expeditionary Force at. Home, is relinquishing office. Mr G. B. Dall, at present one of two assistant-secretaries to the Post and Telegraph Department, and formerly inspector, lias been appointed to the position vacated by Major Holdsworth. Mr Dall, vcho will be given the rank of major, will leave for England towards the end of the present montili. Mr Dall is one of the best-known officers in the postal service, and has been a familiar, figure on the bowling greens of Wellington for many years past.

The death, occurred at the Stratford Hospital on Tuesday evening of a very old resident of the district, Mr- John. Smith, of Stratford, at the ape of 09 years. Mr. Smith came to New Zealand from Staffordshire, England, about 40 years ago, landing at Wellington. Late* hi> came> to Tarajiaki, where he had resided {or about 30 years. He was farming at Cardiff for a considerable time, and 1 for many years was a member of the Stratford County Coun ; cil and a- county representative on the Hospital Board- The deceased leaves a wife and a family of two sons and three daughter's—Messrs John, (who is carrying on farming at the property, Cardiff) and George (on active service), Mrs. C. Chborn (Stratford) and Misses Louisa and Alice Smith, :ra»ident at homo.— Post.
