NEARiNG ST. QUENTIN. FfiENCH PROGRESS INCREASED. London. ,Scpl. D. The French in the vicinity of Crozat Canal have nude progress and are now within four miles of 81. Queutiu at-the nearest point, They forced the canal 1 o"S practically tlie whole front advancing towards Clastres and opposite Liez. 'I heir cavalry patrols are close to La Pore. A French communique states: North of the iSoninie we increased our progress Msl of Avcsnes, in 1 lie direction of Cla>l res, and occupied f.a Motte farm. Oil]- elements crossed the Crozat Canal, opposite Liez. Between the Oise and the Aisne there was violent artillery lire and enemy infantry reactions. During trie night two strong' German counter-attacks in the region of Lafl'aux were repulsed.— Aus. N.Z, Cable Assoc. and Reuter. USEFUL GROUND GAINED. i BRITISH REACH NEW LINE. London, Sept, 9. Renter's correspondent with the British says: Southwards we reached the line eastward of the villages of Trefcon, Poeuilly ) Elechin, and Bernes. We are in Roissel. Thence the line ran along the Roissel-Villers-Faupon railway, we occupying Faucon, also Hauleeourt and Guyencourt. Further north ive carried the spur south-east of Hendecourt and gained useful ground in the village. We are in Dessart Wood, between Fins and Gouzeaucourt. The Germans are reported to he trailing out of Hendecourt, near which we captured a spoil heap which figured prominently in the hattle of Cambrai last November. The British have captured Gouzeaucourt Wood.—Reuter. APPROACHING SIEGFRIED LINE. A SLOWER ADVANCE. London, Sept. 0. While there is no intention to allow the enemy to rest, the rapid movement of the last few weeks is now improbable, and the advance is likely to he somewhat slower as the Allies approach the Siegfried Line and meet opposition by heavy guns. More movement is possible south of the S<?arpe, near the Wotan Line, but here the Germans have a good defensive line behind the canal, which they are improving. We are attacking Gouzeaucourt this morning, but our progress is unknown. We hold the northern edge of Epehy. Patrols are reported to be through the village. 'Patrols also occupied Vendelles and entered Vermand, which is probably the largest town in the neighborhood.— Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc. GERMAN REINFORCEMENTS. STIFFEN THE RESISTANCE. Received Sept, 10, D-Tif p.m. London. Sept. iO. Mr. Philip Gibbs writes: As we approach the Hindenburg line, the enemy is drawing thence strong reinforcements oi fresh troops to replace the tired retreating divisions, which largely account for the stiffened resistance. The enemy is strongly holding the commanding spurs before the Hindenburg line a3 long as possible. He holds Epehy, but our patrols are creeping round north and 'south.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc. USUAL GERMAN REPORT. London, Sept. 9. A wireless German official message states: Strong enemy attacks against the Gouzeaucourt-Epeiiy line failed with heavy losses. Between the Ailetjje and the Aisne an enemy attack in close formation was repulsed along the whole front with sanguinary losses.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc. and Reuter. FEEBLENESS OF ENEMY ARTILLERY. London, Sept. 0. Renter's correspondent at American headquarters states: Repeatedly during the past, even when the German infantry has been most hotly pressed, the German artillery has not provided anything like the assistance which might have been anticipated. Tho example of German counterbattery work given on the occasion of the sanguinary defeat of three German divisions at Creey-aii-Mont was puerile. One is forced to conclude that, perhaps partly owing to the loss of millions of rounds in the retreat, the enemy in certain sectors is short of ammunition. Reuter. RAIDERS REPULSED. London, Sept. 9. Sir Douglas Haig reports: We sticeessftillv repulsed raiders northward of Arleux-en-Gobelle. There was reciprocal artillery activity, chiefly in tho neighborhood of the Arras-Cambrai road, f.a Bassee Canal, and Ypres sectors. BRITISH ADVANCE. London, Sept. 9, The United Press correspondent states: The attack in the neighborhood of Gouzeaucourt is progressing satisfactorily. Prisoners report that it is the intention to hold the line Gonnelieu, Hargicourt, Villaret. Fives have been observed at Douai. j AN AMERICAN REPORT. New York, Sept.
