A special meeting of the Borough Council was licld last evening. Present: The Mayor (Mr. J. \V. M'Millan), Crs. R. Cameron, J. Masters, D. J. Malune, J. H. Thompson, C. Jackson. S. B. Hunter, C B. Walsh, and W, M'Donald. The main business was the consideration of the electric light proposals submitted 'by the engineer (M_r Hollands!. His scheme was to include the purchase pf a 1(10 horse-power Diesel plant, building, switchboard, new lines and new transmission to hydro. The Mayor said it was necessary to do something to cope with the growing demands for power and light. Mr. Hollands' scheme seemed to be a very reasonable one. Cr. Hunter, chairman of the Electric Light Committee, stated that Mr. Kissel, Government. Engineer, had recently been in Stratford, and had stated that the Diesel plant outlined by the electrical engineer would do for the borough for the next six or sevnn years, and by that time the Government may have in operation their scheme of liarnessing several rivers and utilising this power for the several towns. The engineer answered several questions, stating that he suggested a 3ft v/fir below the municipal reserve and building a race through the Model Dairy Firm into the. present tunnel. On the motion of the Mayor, a resolution was carried —"That the Minister for Finance be written to asking him to raise a loan of £7OOO for additions and alterations to the plant " i Son!!.- time was taken up m considering the position of Mr. Hollands, the engineer. With one exception, councillors agreed that they should apply to the Military Service Bocril for a sine die decision in this instance- The engineer had been busy for months fixing up the plant, and it was desirable that he should be retained to carry out theso alterations and improvements. The Mayor was the exception, and was opposed to anv appeal being made. With the Mayor dissenting, a motion was carted that an nnpeal be lodged on Mr. Hollands' 'behalf. GENERAL At the Hospital Board, the motion proposed by Messrs Sole and Morison that a letter he drafted to the Efficiency Board showing the loss to the Hocpital Board's funds through drink, was carried, after a little discussion. Mr Sole's other motion, rescinding that passed at a previous meeting, making a charge of 7s per,day with a rebate of Is per day if paid within one month of bein? rendered, and reverting back to the s6 per day, was lost, Messrs Sole and Hancock being the only members favorable to this reversion. The annual meeting of the General Committee of the Stratford Patriotic Committee was held this afternoon. The principal business was the election of the Executive Committee, and these '.vere re-elected. Mr. Mnrfell succeeding Mr. Rocr,fk for Toko. Mr. Bocoek being T><-.'.r n resident of Inglewood district. Deceased left with the 25th Reinforcements. This is the ••erond fatality in the family. Private W Speight, who had Boer War experience and wnn the Military Medal, bavin? lost his life earlier in the present strufple. He left as a member of the "2Si.ii Reinforcements, and is reported killed in action. Amongst those wounded is Rifleman W H. Johnson, son of Mr. H. Alexander Mebnrry Applied for a transfer of the licence of the Tariki Hotel to James O'Malley. The police objected. Mr. CJ. fT.
