A meeting of the London temporary postal workers to-day demanded extra pay. The National Executive considers its demands a fortnight hence. Lord Pirrie, interviewed after a visit to the shipyards, said he was gratified with the general progress of the shipbuilding position. Tie efficient operation of the Shipping Control Board had improved the service 22 per cent, since January, notwithstanding a deficit of 584,000 gross tons during the first seven months of the year between new con•traction and shipping losses. Daring the six months ended August j 36 per cent, more tonnage was constructed with an increase of only 8 per cent, more labor than in the preceding 1 six months ! NEW ZEALANDERS WIN ATHLETIC EVENTS London, eSpt. 8. The Empire Sports at Stamford Bridge were a great success and there was a huge gathering. Corporal J. E.
