TARANAKI WORKERS' COUNCIL

MONTHLY MEETING. Tho monthly meeting of the Taranaki Workers' Council was held on Friday evening. A considerable amount of business was done. Among other items discussed was the matter of the influx of Indian labor. An animated discussion took place, and it was decided to write protesting against the non-enforcement of the education teat. It was stated that those employed hero were hardly able, to write their own name, in fact, one could hardly speak a word of English. The Workers' Council is very busy endeavoring to collect funds for the erection of a workers' hall. Already the freezing workers, carpenters and several other bodies have contributed towards the fund, and a workers' hall for the purpose of holding meetings, etc., by the various Labor bodies may soon become an accomplished fact. There is to be a monster social reunion to be held at the end of the month for the purpose of aiding the above object. The tickets are going off so readily that it has been decided to take the Coronation Hall in preference to the Good Templar Hall as formerly announced. It is hoped to be able to build a hall which will be a credit to New Plymouth. A strong committee has been set up to enrol electors in both the municipal and Parliamentary roll.
