EXCHANGE OF PRISONERS. GERMANY WITHHOLDS SAFE CONDUCT. FEAR OF REPORTS BY THE REPATRIATED. Received Sept. S, 11.40 p.m. London, Sept- 7. The Foreign Office announces that the Austro-Hungarian Government lias promised that the vessel used for the repatriation of British and Turkish war prisoners, under the Berne agreement, '■hall not be attacked by their naval iorccs. but the German Government has made no such, promise, despite repeated representations from Berne and Constantinople. It appears that the Turkish Government is no doubt willing to execute the agreement ns speedily as possible, but the influence of Germany is being used to obstruct it, partly owing to the desire to perpetuate all the causes of illfeeling between Turkey and Great Britain, and partly owing to the apprehension of the effect on Turkish opinion of the reports which will be brought by repatriated Turkish prisoners.— Aus.-N.Z. TRADE UNION CONGRESS. FREE TRADE REAFFIRMED. Received Sept, S, 5.0 p.m v London, Sept. ft The Trade Union Congress reaffirmed in favor of free Lade by 2,314,000 to 531.000. The voting on the motion to form a new party resulted:— 557,000 for and 3,71-a,OOO against.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assoc.
