HAWERA.
('From Our Own Corrseponendt.) Hawera, 'Sept. 7. A strong southerly gate is blowing to-day. TUe train ourvico was disl»cated sonieivhiit as the first train through from Wangauui arrived .at Hawera atter -l p.m., instead of before noon. Judging from appearances, it was a "rocky" trip, as the carriages and platforms showed visible signs of scraping through papa and clay formations. At the station a notice was posted mlonniug tlte .public that, owing to slips between Moicuia and Wangaehu the service south had been suspended"lt takes a horse all its time to drag me andan empty cart up the hill," remarked a settler at Saturday's council meeting, thus disclosing his nationality. "I'm 7(i and u ratepayer for 3(J years," he continued. He possesses patienee, aud that will be rewarded, as the council has given instructions to have the hill metalled. "It would pay us handsomely to grow our own oats, etc., remarked the chairman (Cr. Murdoch) at the County Council meeting to-day. "At Marton they caa grow good feed all the year round without any trouble," he continued, ''and the feeding of our teams is going to prove very costly." "It won't pay on the high-priced lands around Hawera," remarked Or. Tarrant, so evidently the council would have to look for 30 or 40 acres in another county if they desired to follow up the chairman's remarks.
