ELTHAM.

(From Our Own Correspondent.) . Eltham, September 4. During the winter the ladies of this town held a series of euchre tournaments and dances to build up the funds of the school committee. The functions proved very enjoyable, and made a fine •■nest-egg" for the committee. On Monday evening the latter entertained the ladies at a tournament and dance. At cards, the winners in the ladies' competition were Mcsdames J. Campbell and Power, whilst Messrs Yates and Curtis were too good for their opponents in the games decided amongst the men. ■ After the cards had been removed, the floor was well fillc-d with dancers, the music 'being provided 'by Mrs Foster and her son (R. Foster), while Mr. .1. Kenny acted as M.C, The amount secured was £3O, which, with trie subsidy, should bring it to £6O. ' Whilst Elthamians were gliding over the boards, the Rawhitiroa folk were also making merry with the plain and fancy dress ball held the same evening in aid o'f patriotic funds. There was a crowded floor, and all thoroughly enjoyed the outing- Keen interest was laken'in a waltzing competition, and the judges had' no light task in making their decision, the placings being: Miss A- Reed and A. Klgar first, Miss E- Feed and'J. Scoon second. The costumes worn were in infinite variety, weird, fantastic, and original, the decision going to Miss Bertha Brown in Indies and Ifr. D. .Afar for gentlemen. Messrs Silver and May relished the duties of M.'sC, while the music by Mr. T/. Foster was all that could lie desired. After meeting all expenses, it is anticipated that a profit of £7 will be available for patriotic purposes
