(Prom Our Own Correspondent.) ' At the ordinary monthly meeting of >j the Town Board on Monday evening the action of the clerk in ordering one . ton of carbide was endorsed. The Treasury notified that £54 12s subsidy on , rates had been forwarded to the board's 1 account. The request of A. E. Parkes to have the roadway passing his resi- ' denee metalled was 'agreed to, and the f foreman was instructed to" have estimates ! in at next meeting. It is the intention ' of Mr. Parkes to erect a concrete garage ' on the corner of- his section. The foreman recommended taking the '' Longfellow Road drain to the sandhills. ' Recommendation' agreed to. The fore- 1 man was granted 2s per hour for break- , ing down carbide. The board discussed in committee with the consulting engineer (Mr. Twogood) matters affecting the electric lighting scheme. The action of the chairman in granting permission to the Red Cross Committee to use forms from the recreation ground pavilion was confirmed. Accounts ampunting to £B4 Gs were passed for payment. Mr. O'Brien (town clerk) and his grandson, Ray, were taken suddenly ill on Thursday night. Dr. Sharpe was sum-' moned, and found the patients suffering from ptomaine poisoning, contracted by eating tinned fish. The sufferers were in a precarious state for some hour's, but owing to the prompt and skilful attention of the doctor and nurse serious results were averted. Mr. Twogood (hydro-electrical engineer) has been in Opunake for a few days in connection with the local electric lighting scheme. The annual meeting of the Presbyterian congregation was held on Monday evening, the Rev. T. Tait (Manaia) modorator, presiding. The treasurer (Mr. Pettigrew) read the balance-sheet, which showed that, considering the district was not a settled charge, very good results for the past year. The manse was rented to a tenant. The moderator said the Presbytery was short of ministers, and advised the congregation to obtain a suitable missioner or a settled minister when one was obtainable. He had in view a minister during the summer months, as Opunake was an ideal place for an elderly and capable minister during the summer months on a recuperating I holiday. The managers elected were! Messrs Stronge, McCarrison, Pettigr -v (treasurer), Ross (secretary), lily. 1 Windebourn and Bolane.
