DISTRICT NEWS.
TONGAPORUTU. (From Our Own 'Correspondent.) On Friday evening,- August 23k], the lady members of the Victoria League jield a jumble snle and dance in the hall. The proceeds are to be used to supply Christmas cheer to our boys at the front. There was a full attendance of the settlers and their wives from all parts of the district, and a very pleasant evening was enjoyed by all. The articles were sold by Messrs Scott and Waters, and realised £27 lis. The Misses K. Rig™ and C. Scott ai:d Farquar were the moving spirits and made the function a financial success. Mrs Scott, as secretary, worked hard, as did Miss Rigg and Miss Farquar. All our young men are away at the front, excepting of course, those under age and medically unfit. The Okau factory opened. for the season on September Ist. Mr O'Donnell'a son, James, who was seriously wounded some twenty months ago, is still under medical treatment at Home. His other two sons (Harold and Leonard) were both well when they wrote last, in June. His fourth son, Michael, who left with the 39th Reinforcements, is no doubt at 'his destination by now. A very pleasant and enjoyable evening was brought to a close at an early hour on Saturday morning by all standing and singing the National Anthem. TOKO. A pleasing little ceremony took place at the Toko School on Friday afternoon, when occasion was taken to make o presentation to Miss L. M. Spenee, who is leaving to take charge of the Waiongona School. The pupils could not let their teacher go away without expressing their appreciation, and so presented her with.an ebony hand-mirror and brush and a fountain'pen. Mr J. T. Kilpatrick (chairman of the school committee) made the presentation speech in a happy and pleasing manner, and the presents were handed to the recipients by little Miss Maggie McDonald. Mr Max Gernhoefer (late chairman I and Mr. A. J. Cha|ney, lion, sec, added a few words of advice to the children to always do their best when (hoy were at school and so help the leathers to do their work also Adjournment was then made to the headmaster's house, where Mrs Allan provided afternoon tea, and song and story wore indulged in. Mr 0. L. Allan has been at the Toko School for the past fifteen years. v
