DISTRICT NEWS.
KATOIROAD (From Our Own Correspondent.) An interesting and impressive function took place at the Kahui Road schoolroom on Wednesday last, when residents of the district met together for the purpose of presenting memorials to the next-of-kin of f.illeji soldiers. A feature of the ceremony was the number who attended, every house in the district being represented, which spoke volumes for the Kahui folks' sense of duty, coupled with respect for the relatives of fallen men. The Chairman of the Kaluii Farewell and Welcome Home' Committee (Mr H. F. Anniss) said the object pf the gathering was to do honor to those who had died in their country's service during the war, particularly to two men from Kahui district, Privates' Roger Byrnes and T. K. Morgan, to the relatives of whom the Kahui Committee had decided ' to present memorials. The Hev. Addenbrooke, after expressing regret that the Rev- Father Doolaghty was unable to attend, outlined how much the freedom loving world owed to those men who hai given all they possessed in tXcir country's cause. He considered t'nat a great honor and privilege had been conferred on him in being selected for the purpose for which he was there that day. We would probably never know how critical tilings had been and had it not been for the self-sacrificing spirit shown by those men who had fought and died for home, relatives and friends in the national cause we as a nation would probably have ceased to exist. Everything, he said, even the earth itself, had been m&Hif more sacred and glorious bv the sacrifices made by those who had cheerfully given their all. Every soldier could not gain the Military Cross, the Victoria Ooas or the D.5.0.. but having given W? life li* conltl not do mn>:->_ Ho thpT! presenter! the memorials (whic'i
some framed enlarged photograph of tha soldier, coupled with an illuminated address signed by the 'Kahui residents) to Mr Byrnes and Mrs T, K. Morgan, after which afternoon tea was dispensed by the ladles TNs memorials, which were much admired by those present, were very tastefully executed, and were considered very much more appropriate than the ordinary presentation medal which has been adopted by some districts.
