Mr. W. J. McDonald, formerly general manager of the Kaupokonui Dairy Factory Company, and who went north some time ago to take up farming, .is acting general manager of the Hawera Dairy Factory, relieving Mr. A. Dunlop. A pleasing little ceremony took place at the West End School yesterday afternoon, when occasion was taken to make a presentation to Mr. 0. Howarth, Who is leaving to take up an appointment on the staff of the Central School. On behalf of the scholars, Mr. W. Thomson, secretary of the committee, presented Mr. Howarth with a bronze ink well and a bronze tray, and for the staif of the school Mrs. Dowling (head teacher) presented a salad bowl and servers. Both eulogised the work done by Mr. Howarth during his connection with the school. Mr. Howarth suitably replied. The prize-money gained by the scholars in connection with the Hawera Winter Show was also presented. Afternoon tea was served by the teachers and elder scholars, and a pleasant function terminated with the singing of the National Anthem. A private cablegram received in Dunedin states that Lieut.-Colonel Cecil Humphries, D.5.0., D.C.M., son of Mrs. Rowse, formerly of Christchurch, has been killed in action.—Press Association. A Gisborne press message states that Mr. R. Stone Florance, assistant magistrate for the Gisborne district, is being retired. He has been 21 years on the bench, and has sat in 21 courts in various portions of the Dominion. He retains his position of district land registrar and examiner of titles there.
