LAND FOR SOLDIERS.
CONDITIONS OF SETTLEMENT.; REGULATIONS MADE. Regulations tinder the Discharged Soldiers* Settlement Act are gazetted. The provide that if two or more applications are received in respect to one allotment of land, the Land Board shall determine which of the applicants, in its opinion, is most suitable to occupy the land, or in most need of the ißnd," and shall dispose of the land so as to comply with the directions of the Act that the Board shall as far as practicable assist applicant, in acquiring suitable allotments. If the Board is unable to determine the. question a ballot will be taken. The price is to be fixed by the Board, and i 3 to be such as the board considers reasonable, although it may foe less than the price paid for the land. COMPULSORY RESIDENCE. In the case of land purchased on deferred payments, the purchaser shall, on the approval of his application, pay a deposit equal to 5 per cent, of the price of the land; or such lesser amount as the Ministfer may determine, and the balance shall be paid by equal, annual instalments extending over such period as the Board determines, with interest {5 per cent) half yearly on the unpaid balance- Upon payment in full a certificate of title for the land will bo issued. Residcnco on any land held under license to occupy shall be compulsory. In the case of bush or swamp land it shall commence within four years, and in the case of open or partly open land within one year from the d'ats of the license, and shall thereafter be continuously during the whole of the remaindei of the term It is provided, however, that the Board may in its discretion dispense with the above- requirements. No land required for cash or on deferred payment shall, except wit.li the consent of the Land Board and tho approval of the Minister of Lands, be capi able of being transferred until the expiry of ten years after the date of the sale, With regard to leased, land, the term will be fixed by the Board, but shall not be longer than 33 years in the case of other lands, with a perpetual right of renewal The value of improvements to ce effected shall Ihe fixed by the Land Board, and, snibject to the discretion of t.'ie Board, residence shall be compulsoryTile fee simple, of the land may be acquired at any time dmrinxj tho continuance of tho lease. ADVANCES. Under the heading "financial," it is provided that the amount of advance that may be made to any oik- person on land acquired under the Discharged Soldier?' Settlement Act shall not exceed £*soo, but the Minister may, if in his opinion special circumstances render such amount inadequate, authorise an additional advance, not exceeding £230. In no case shall the amount advanced for buildings exceed £250. The amount of advance to any person for the purchase of a dwelling and appurtenances on other than rural "land shall not exceed the sum of £MQO, and for any other purpose shall not exceed £-j>,>ob.
