THE MINERS' TROUBLE.

PROSPECT OF RESUMPTION. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Westport, Last Night. The mining dispute is stili unsettled Tin- deputies were prepared to resume work at Stockton to-day, but the miners, apparently, were not prepared to do so pending some definite action in regard to tlie demand for a 20 per cent, increase. Millerton is also again idle, but at Dennistqn work was not interrupted. There is a prospect of resumption of work at all the mines on Wednesday. RAILWAYMAN'S VIEWS. Taumarnnui, Last Night. At a meeting of railway servants here yesterday, the following resolution was carried:—"We consider the action of the Government in not compelling the mineowners to meet the miners a further proof of their inability to deal with matters of importance and urgency—r fact already demonstrated bv the present cost of living, to which we have frequently referred by resolution. We say, unhesitatingly, that the Miners' Committee made a grave mistake in striking, because we are convinced they are injurin" tlicir own class most by doing so if the present wages are insufficient, to keep tliem, but the position would be intolerable with' no wages at all, In our opinion, the Govern-'ent is responsible for the present position, for, had they forced a conference enabling both sides to state their ease, they could have insisted on a settlement based on justice and equity. The suggestion to set up a Commission is not satisfactory, its operation being too slow and bound by rod tape. The question requires prompt handling, being of vital and general hfr. portance in the present coal crisis."
