THE TRIANGULAR TOURNAMENT. AUCKLAND GRAMMAR SCHOOL DEFEATS NELSON COLLEGE. There wa.% a very good attendance at the second match of the triangular tournament, which took place at the Recreation Ground yesterday, when, after it very fast and interesting contest Auck- ! land Grammar School defeated Nelson College by 22 points to 3. Heavy rain | fell just prior to the commencement of the match and made the ground and the ball very heavy, militating considerably against accurate handling of the ball and the passing of the hacks. The Aucklandj ers kept the southern team busy on the defence, and it was only due to the splendid tackling and line kicking of we Nelson backs—particularly by Baxter, half, and Mill, five-eight—that the southerners were not completely overrun. Until the last twenty minutes of the game the Nelson defence proved almost impregnable. Then the Aueklanders' pressure began to tell its tale, and six tries, two being converted, were rapidly scored, the result of excellent concerted plav and fast following up. Auckland attacked from the opening and had the Nelson full back in trouble, but he passecj. to Mills and lined. A scrum ensued 111 front of the Nelson goal, but Baxter neatly saved. College forwards, headed by Harrison, McDonald, and Chrisp, carried play to Auckland's 25, but Wright got his backs moving and Badeley nearly scored. Nelson worked play back again, Baxter passing to Mills, who side-stepped m clever fashion and scored one of the prettiest tries seen on the ground. Gundy failed to goal. Nelson had a shot at goal from a penalty on resuming, but the attempt failed. In the second quarter Auckland kept play in their opponents' territory, but were unable to break through. Halftime was reached with Nelson 3, Auckland nil. The early stages of the third quarter proved a repetition of the second. Auckland, both forwards and backs, pfessed,, the latter indulging in some nice passing bouts, but the defence was good, until finally Wright got across in the corner. McCullough failed to goal. Auckland also had a couple of shots from free kicks, without result. Grierson was nearly over from a passing bout, hut was well up-ended. From the resulting scrum the ball was shot over to him, and he scrambled across at the corner. Badeley failed to goal. Another fine passing rush ended in Badeley scoring, Harty failing to goal. Auckland were now getting all over the southerners, and in succession ICronfield, McCullough. and Peart scored, the last two tries being converted by McCullough and Badeley, the game ending: Auckland Grammar School 22 Nelson College 3 Mr. C. 11. Wynyard refereed.
