MILITARY SERVICE BOARD.
SITTINGS AT HAWJ3RA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) A sitting of the First Wellington Military Service Board was held at Hawera on Saturday. Edward George Baylig, farmer, Opunake, who failed to appear when liis name was called, had his appeal dismissed. Appellant appeared at a later stage, but, in the opinion of the board, his' explanation was not satisfactory, and the board allowed its decision to stand. The chairman said that appellant could apply for a re-hearing. .Tames Parish, farmer, Tariki ('Mr. O'Dea) appealed on the ground that he had a farm at Tariki and was milking 27 cows, employing no labor. He did not think his brothers could take his place.— Decision reserved. James Henry Wilson, ,motor driver, Manaia, had his appeal adjourned until next sitting, as he was endeavoring to arrange for financial assistance. Owing to Alfred William Smith, master tailor, of Hawera, having gone to camp, his appeal was withdrawn. The employers' appeal for John Lynch, factory manager. Tarata, was adjourned to New Plymouth for hearing. Eric Joseph Kilray, dairv farmer, Otakeho (Mr. O'Dea) appealed on the ground of public interest. Matthew Kilray gave evidence in support of the application to the effect that he and his family came to the Dominion from Australia about four years ago, and had intended to return to the Commonwealth. Owing to unforeseen circumstances, they had been unable'to do so. Appellant had been refused a permit to return on account of the Military Service Act. —Appeal dismissedThe Patea Freezing Works appealed for Richard John (Leslie Bromley, watch engineer. Patea. The secretary of the company (Mr. Williams) stated that there was a great shortage of skilled engineers. Mr. Harrison, chief engineer, supported the appeal, and detailed the duties of each engineer—Leave granted' sine die, so long as the reservist remains in his present position. Clarence Tvan Sbrimpton, cheese factory manager, was granted sine exemption. Charlei Crosby, share-milker. Normanhiv (Mr. O'Dea) appealed on the ground of public interest. He stated he was on Mrs. Kiddle's farm, and would shortly be milking about 60 cows.—'Decision reserved. Peter Romski, fanner manager. Donglas, appealed on the ground of public interest Owing to appellant not having yet been examined, his caso was adjourned until next sitting. When leaving the box, ar Mlant cheerfully remarked: "As far as the war goes, I am willing to face anything." William James Simons, fanner, Inglewood.—Adjourned to October sitting. Arthur Edward M'Ewan, carriage builder, Hawera—Adjourned until next sitting, owing to state of appellant's wife's health. Mrs. J. Cousins, Normanby, appealed for her husband, John Sydney Cousins, laborer, Xormanby.—Leave granted until October draft. Mrs- Alice ifellinger (Mr. Powell), appealed for the return of her husband, Captain J. T. iDallinger, who is at present on servics in .Sling Camp. Appellant stated that her husband went away with the Main Body. He served at Gallipoli, Prance, Egypt, also South Africa. The reason of his being in . Sling Camp was that he was unfit for further service in the field. Major Cox said that Captain Dallinger was a professional soldier, being attached to the X Z.PJ3. The chairman said the board had information that the military authorities were returning in drafts soldiers, upon theiT own application, who had been on active service for over three'years. If Captain Dallinger were to make application, leave would probably Ibe granted to return to the DominionSamuel Spence, solicitor, Stratford, applied for extension of leave to enable him to arrange affairs in his office and attend to some business in connection with his brother's estate.—Further hearing adjourned until October. Truhy King, solicitor, Stratford, applied for leave to enable him to arrange his business affairs before entering camp. —Adjourned until October sitting. The adjourned appeal of Thomas Taylar, Miro. Inglewood, was further reviewed. and, in reply to the board, appellant said that there was prneticallv no change in his circumstances since he was last before the board.—Decision reserved sine die. Ernest Bamford, farmer, Hawera (Mr O'Dea), appealed on the ground of public interest and undue hardship.—Decision re wed. James Laing Campbell, farmer, Eltham, apiplied for leave until the end of the vcar. He stated that he was working three separate farms, none of which adjoined each other.—Leave granted until November draft. The appeal of Daniel Kerrisk, farmer, Tokaora, was dismissed, there being no appearance of appellaitt. John Wiesnewski, farmer, Inglewood.— Adjourned sine die. Edgar Francis farmer. Waitorihi.—Adjourned until next silting. 'Henry Alfred Knowles, farmer, Tariki. —Adjourned sine die.
