THE TBI ANGULAR TOURNAMENT. GBAUJIAB SCHOOL DEFEATS HIGH SCHOOL The opening match of the series in whlcl the Auckland Grammar Scliool, Nelson College and >'ew Plymouth High School are participating, took place on Saturday, when Auckland Grammar School met the local boys. Conditions were ideal, the ground being in good order, and the weather cool and dull. There was a good attendance'of spectators. Faster, heavier and cleverer than the local backs, the visitors handled the ball wiih machine-like precision, the leather passing through the whole of the backs with hardly a mistake. It is lo the iucisiveness of their attack, as well a3 to the weak tackling of the local team—the bacto signally failed to tackle low—that they owe their victory. The forwards were fairly evenly matched.

The visitors won by 53 points to 111. Ml. i. Johnston refereed.

The game was ployed in four spells of 20 minutes each.

Almost from the kick-off Grammar School gave a taste of 'their passing ability. A fine pass by Badeley gave Kronfleld an opening, he scoring after a fine run. McCullough converted. Stretton was nearly over, and then Burkhardt let the local forwards to midway, but the Aucklanders, headed by Harty, came back. A passing bout between Grierson, McCrystal and Kronfleld resulted hi the lattu scoring his second try, and a few mlnutw later, from a similar piece of play, he scored again. From the line-out the local forwards set up an old-tuue Tqfranakl rush, headed by Osborne and Atkinson, the latter scoring. McKay converted. A passing bout saw Kronfleld again run over, and McCullough goaled. High School carried play to the visitors' corner, but there was no difficulty in clearing, and Harrison slipping. McCullough, who followed m> fast, scored, Harty failed to convert. Another passing bout saw Stretton score almost immediately, Baddeley making a fine attempt to convert, and the third quarter ended: (Irammar School, 42; High School 5.

A long kick by McKay found touch at the 25, and from the line-out he passed. Grleraon intercepted, but was stopped by Wills, and (he local forwards, following up, smothered the fullback and Osborne scored. McKay converted. The Nelson team, which arrived by the afternoon train ou Saturday, and was present ut the latter part of the match, will comprise: Full-back, Chapman; three-quarters, Cuudj. Papps, jfloimes; flveelghths, Sutherland Mills (captffln) ; half, Baxter; forwards, Watson, McDonald, Harris, Tiller, Chrisp, Davidson, Langbein; wing forward, Trolove. The Auckland team will be the same as on Saturday.

JUNIOR COMPETITION. Some of the junior teams are anxious to play a second round of the compet'tion, and, provided the majority of the teams are agreeable, a second round will be played.

WELLINGTON v. CANTERBURY. Christchurch, Last Night. Wellington v. Canterbury inter-provlncial football match attracted a very large crowd of spectators. Wellington won by nine points to nil. Undoubtedly the better team won, Wellington showing much the superior combination, especially among the backs. Forwards of the two teams were fairly well matched but Wellington backs neld the upper hand in both offensive and defensive. Porter, Corner and Troy scored tries for Wellington, none of which was converted.

WAIRARAPA v. WELLINGTON. Wellington, Last Night. Wairarapa rtugby representatives suffered a severe defeat at the hands of Wellington 10-day Wellington winning the return match bv 33 points to 3. The visitors were the heavier 'combination, but were outclassed in all departments of the game. At half time tho score was • Wellington, 11; Wairarapa, 3. Wellington plajsd a dashing game in the second half, and Increased their score to 33.
