large ENEMY FORCES. • Tokio, Aug. 22. The War Office announces that the enemy force eastward of Simacov is now 80,000. The enemy is arming rafts with machine-guns on the Usuri river. Four enemy steamers at Ljackicanka are apparently intending to land men at Spaskoys, 30 miles from the Japanese front line, which will necessitate the withdrawal of the Japanese right wing. There are about 17,000 of the enemy in tiie Amur area, 80,000 in Zabaikal, and 3500 in the Urals.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc.

WHOLESALE ARRESTS BY SOVIETS. Copenhagen, Aug. 22. The Frankfort Gazette says that the Soviet Government has arrested 15,000 officers at Moscow, who are held as hostages. Altogether about 50,000 officers liave been arrested throughout Russia. A great number of the upper classes have also been arrested at Moscow on the ground that such action is necessary in order to suppress the counter-revolu-tion.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc.
