lu connection with the reference to the proposed loan for street works inaue at the New Plymouth Council meeting on Monday night, his Worship the Mayor desires to point out that he has always recognised the desirability of holding a public meeting and giving the fullest information to the ratepayers prior to the poll. It was his intention to havo Tjroughi this matter before tne council,at its last meeting with the object of discussing the arrangements for the meeting, but unfortunately owing to illness he was not able to attend the council meeting. Had it not been for 'his iDness the meeting would probably have been held this week.

The meeting will be held next week, probably on the Friday evening. It cant not bo hold early in the week, as the Mayor is liable to be called on the jury during the first portion of the week. There will, however, bo ample time for the fullest information to reach every ratepayer before the poll, whicn will not ho held until the Wednesday following. The necessity for the loan was fuily explained by tho Mayor in his annual re l port, which has been published, and in addition a detailed schedule showing the works contemplated has since been published. Every publicity has 'been given to the matter, and there has been no at> tempt to withhold anything from the ratepayers. His Worship trusts that there will be a largo meeting, when he will endeavor to supply any further information which any particular ratepayer may desire.
