INSUFFICIENT SCHOOL GRANTS.
EDUCATION BOARD'S ILLEGAL ACT. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Wellington, Last Night. The Auditor-General has "tagged" the Wellington Education Board's baiancesheet, for the reason that certain moneys had been used for purposes other than those for which they were received. The secretary stated at to-day's meeting that he presumed the reference was to the maintenance, rebuilding, and sites' accounts. The Auditor-General had explained that the tag was simply dictated by legal rulings with regaTu .o the board's finances.
Mr. Forsyth, chairman, said that, in effect, the auditor was pointing out a weakness of the Government in not supplying the necessary money for carrying on the educational system in New Zealand.
Members expressed the opinion that Legislative reform was needed, as the grants were not nearly enough. Some country schools were not only out. of date, but were insanitary.
The board decided to interview the Minister on the matter.
