A New York cable states that Signor Caruso has married the daughter of Benjamin Park, a New York lawyer. A London cable states that Mr. Massey and Sir Joseph Ward expect to leave Canada by September. Sister Gill has resigned her position as sub matron at the New Plymouth Hospital. A telegram from Waimate reports that Mr. Richard Meredith, formerly a member of the House of Representatives for Ashley, died yesterday.

Mr, M. Fraser, chairman of the Taranaki Hospital and Charitable Aid Board, is at present indisposed. He was present at the opening of the meeting yesterday, but before the meeting concluded he was granted leave to retire. Before commencing the business of the annual meeting last night, the suppliers of the Bell Block Dairy Company passed a vote of sympathy with Mr. and Mrs. H. Bishop, of Egmont Road, who have recently lost a sou at the front.

The latest hospital report contains the names of the following Taranaki men.— Severe case: Sergeant R. A. Sangster (Stratford). Not severe cases: W. F. Deakin (Kaupokonui), W. J. H. Howson (New Plymouth), and Lance-Corporal R. Johnson (Fitzroy). A Press Association cable message from Melbourne states that Mr. James R. Pound, formerly of New Zealand, has been appointed lecturer and demonstrator in chemistry and metallurgy; at the Ballarat School of Mines.

The following applications to be placled on the probationers' list at the New [Plymouth Hospital were approved at [yesterday's meeting of the Board: Misses Hilda L Fox, Newtown, Wellington; Kathleen S. Blundell, Palmerston North; Laura Nullward Kelburn, Wellington; Grace Lawrence, Tariki; and Beryl Howie, Hunterville. The death occurred recently at St. Bathans (says the Otago Daily Times) of a very old pioneer in the person of Mr. Thomas O'Dowd. Born in Castlemaine, County Kerry, Ireland, in 1835, he came to Victoria with his brother (the late Archdeacon O'Dowd) in 1862. He arrived in New Zealand in 1864, and followed up the Hartley and Riley, Dunstan, and Skippers rushes, eventually settling in St. Bathans in 1868, where h,e resided ever since.
