At the monthly meeting on Monday evening, the Mayor (Mr J. W. McMillan), presided. J. W. Bonn, late Mayor, forwarded framed protograph of last Council and officials—Received with thanks, and will he placed in the Council Chambers. E Parry, chief electrical engineer, stated that he fully endorsed Mr Holland's recommendations for augmenting and improving the plant, machinery and overhead lines of the Stratford Borough Council.—Received.
TV. Rawson agreed to the Council's terms re completing drainage to his property. C. J. Reakes, director of Live Stock TMvi-si.-.n, Wellington, notified the Council that the Public Works Commission will not agree to the Council increasing the salary of Mr Is. Ross, meat inspector and abattoir manager, thp agreement bcin?, between the Council and his Department, and any additional payment should be mado to the Department and not to the officer The letter added that Mr Ross received increases from the Department until he reached the maximum of the grade to which he belongs .—Received. Hastings Borough Council forwarded circular re interment of all enemy aliens as early as possibles-Resolution endorsed.

I) Cosssrove, Director of Hecrnitin?. acknowledged the Council's intention to appeal on behalf of E. F. Holland, borough 9leetrie.il engineer.—Tn this connection two applications offering to fill Mr Holland's position were received. The Mayor opposed making application. With the rest of the Council he was sorry to lose. Mr Holland, 'but did not think anything £o<hl would come with the Knowledge that there were sirlistitutea available. Ct. Masters disagreed with the Mayor's contention. The appeal concerned the whols town. Their engineer had srot the works well under way, and a new man would take manv months to pick up the rim of tliiiisrs. Crs. Hmiter, Jackson and Cameron also favored the appeal boin<; made, the fonner inn- it should be a sine die one. The motion was carried, the Mayor vol in? a,uain=t. Cr Hunter and borong-h solicitor will support the appeal at the next sitting of the Military Service 'Board.

PROTESTANT POLITICAL ASSOCIATION*.
There was an attendance of GOO at tin' Town Hall on Monday, when the Rev. Howard Elliott delivered an address entitled "Tracking the Jesuit? in Xew Zealand." At the close of a 90 minutes" speech the following resolution ivas carried:— "That this meeting of the Protestant electors of Stratford expresses its resentment at the tyrannical action of the Oovernment in prohibiting wellknown and patriotic Protestant literature for circulation in the country. That this meeting views with deep concern the unnecessary nature of the recent War Regulations relating to the Press and publications, and warns the Government that such action can only result in the forfeiture of the confidence of the groat Protestant majority of citizens. That this meeting calls unon C A. Wilkinson. MP. for K<»mont. in the absence of Capt. Hine. M.P.. to n«p his influence to secure the removal of these prohibitive measures, and thus ensure a semblance of justice to the most loval and patriotic section of the community." Mahoe and Lowgarth \ettlers attended in large numbers at the Mahoe Hall on Friday evening, when a farewell social was tendered Corpl. Jones. A fine scries of songs, recitations, etc., was contributed, principally by EJthiim visitors, those assisting in this direction being Slesdames Beesley, Misses Coates find D. Ciiniuerworth. Mr Bee-ley and Master Irwin. A wristlet watch was presented to Corp. Jones, the speeches being made by Messrs Komi ftiul T. R. Anderson, the recipient suitably acknowledging the gift- The dance music was supplied by Mr and Mrs Bees, lev (cornet and piano), whilst Messrs H. Mellow and A. MeLarry as M's.O. kept all busy. A word of praise is due Mr Tukc. secretary and the ladies' committee, for the work they accomplished in what proved to be the 'best social held there for many years.
