MAORI MILITARY DESERTERS.
CARRIED OUT OF A PAH. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Auckland, August 18. On Saturday a party of police visited the Maori pa at Mercer with the intention of apprehending Maoris who had failed to .parade for medical examination. Before the visit of the police a large party of Maoris of apparently military age were seen to board a launch and proceed down the Waikato River. The police at the pa questioned a number of men of military age, three oi whom refused to give their names and were arrested. Subsequently they were convicted and fined £1 each, and their names were then forthcoming. One oi them was found to be wanted by the military authorities as a defaulter, and, after paying the fine, was again arrested. Four other Maoris, also found in the pa. were arrested, but refused to walk, and were carried out of the pa and taken to the railway station in a motor-car, tht-nce to Auckland, and handed over to Mip military authorities.
