SIR DOUGLAS HAIG'S REPORT. GROUND GAINED ON THE ANGRE. London, August 16. Sir Douglas Haig reports: We advanced our line Blightly at night-time north-eastward of Morlancourt, and repulsed an attack on a post in this vicinity after sharp fighting. Local fighting jccurrre on the northeastern outskirts of Thiepval Wood. Our patrols there crossed to the left bank of the Anere. Patrols further north progressed between Beaucourt-sui-Ancro. Puisieux, and Miraumont. There is increased hostile artillery fire southward o.f the S'otnme and between the La Bassce Oanal and Ypres.— Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assoc. and Kcuter. FURTHER FRENCH PROGRESS. iLondon, August 10A French communique states that our troops progressed in the region of Villers les Roye and St. Aurin. Eastward of Armancourt we occupied our former first lines. In the Champagne we took some prisoners in the IPerthes-les Burlus sector. FURTHER ENEMY WITHDRAWAL. New York, August 16. German withdrawals on the Western front continue. The British gained a mile south of Merris, capturing Vieux Berquin.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assoc. FRENCH OPINION ON PEACE FEELERS. Paris, August IG. General Humbert, interviewed, said we are now able to fonj.ee how the war will end, but it is more essential than ever that the Allies force the acceptance of their own terms. It was utterly futile to discuss peace feelers. Frenchmen were unanimous in this attitude, after their bitter experience of the Germans' appalling arrogance, ruthlessness, and lust for conquest.—Times.
