SOLDIERS' CLUB.

SECONDiANNimSABxV The -second anniversary ofthS'fcpoftV of the New Plymouth Soldiers' 01n> was celebrated last night by a Social gather-, fag held on the club premises, at which the members of the Returned Soldifirs' Association entertained their friends. There was a large gathering, about 160 guests being present. As is crtstomtty at Soldiers' Clnb socials, the proceedings throughout were pleasantly infonml, and a thoroughly enjoyable e»alsn|' wis spent. Progressive Euchre formed part of the programme. A large &umber .participated, the winners being Mrs, {ought and Mr. King. A number of musical items were given, and greatly enjoyed. Mr. P. Fredric's orchestra gave several selections, Messrs. Skelton isd Wells played a violin duo, and Mr. 1)51 played a couple of cornet solos. Solos were sung by Misses Cooker, Young and Ed-' wards, Misses Cocker and Young also contributing a duet. Songs were also given by- Messrs. Dunstan sod Cooper, and a party of vocalists also-sang several choruses. ..•■'■ ' Captain MeDiannid, in. expressing the thanks of the returned men iot the Service rendered by those who Kad supported the club, referred to the clnbs in the field, and said they were the nearest thing to a little bit of home that the t»""» ever saw. Unlike those Clubs, however, the institutions at home were managed mostly by the ladies, and he paid a tribute to the very valuable work done in this connection. He referred to the difficulty experienced by the men in settling down into civil life again, and said that the clutys were serving a very useful purpose in assisting the men to break awAy from the influence of the very' strange experiences through which many of then had passed. He thanked all who had in any way assisted the club during the Bast year, and said he felt compelled to Mention especially the work of Mm. C; H. Burgess and Miss W. Sole. At his call the boys gave three lusty cheers for those who had entertained and helped them. : The proceedings terminated with the singing of the National Anthem.
