Lieut. H. Wilkinson, MjC., C. de; G., Beige, left by the mail train yesterday for Auckland, en route for Europe. The following Taranaki names ore given in the latest hospital report published:—Dangerously ill, A. E. Bishop (Bell Block). Not severe case,. Bridge-, man (Tariki).
Mr. T. S. Young, of the New Plymouth office of the New Zealand Express Company, has been transferred to the Dunedin offico of the company, and leaves early next week for the south. Mr. E. V. Clay, of the Auckland office, has arrived in New Plymouth as successor to Mr. Young. The death occurred on Sunday evening of Mr. John Hewitt, of Morley Street, at the age of 61. Mr. Hewitt, who had been a resident of New Plymouth for a number of years, died somewhat unexpectedly, having teen apparently in his usual health until a short time before his end. He was formerly in the employ of Mr. Newton King; Lieutenant H. W. Ni»on, of Christchurch, son of Eev. John Nixon, a former resident of New Plymouth, who was wounded in the Oiead some months ago while serving with the Nlew. ZeaJ&nders in France, has teen invalided home. The death of Miss Malcolm, eldest daughter of Mr. A. S. Malcolm, M.P. for Chrtha, occurred at Waikouaiti, where she 1 had been staying for health reasons. The young lady, vno wis a great favorite with those who knew her, had been ill for about two years. Mr. M. Fraser, an old resident of Lawrence, arfd for many years collector for the Hospital and Charitable Aid Board at Dunedin, died at Kaiapoi, at the age of 74 years. He is survived by his wife and family, of five daughters and seven sons.
The latest mails bring news of the death, from wounds of Brigadier-General F. W. Lumsden, V.C., D.5.0., who has had a very distinguished career. At the beginning of the war, he was a major in the Koyal Marine Artillery. He won the D.S.O. in 1916, and about live months later won two bars to the decoration on May 11. The next month he brought in six enemy field guns in the face of heavy enemy fire, and won the Victoria Cross. This was followed on April 22 of this year bv the winning of si third bar to the DJS.O. by his gal- ! lant leading of his brigade in, a big raid on the enemy lines. He was 47 years of age at the time of his death. Gtneral Lumsden's Victoria Cross was the second won by a member of the Royal Marine Artillery, the first having been gained ia 18o5. : - -
