AN ESCAPEE'S SENTENCE. By Telegraph.—Press Association. Palmerston 2s*., August !). Richard Harold Edwin Giles, 18 years, who- was under sentence of four years' reformative treatment, and while waiting a further sentence on two charges of tlieft, escaped from Palmerston Gaol on .Sunday evening, was arrested again at Oroua Down 3 tin Wednesday, having broken into two dwellings meanwhile and committed further thefts. He was brought before the Court today, pleaded guilty to all the charges, and was sentenced to 12 months' refermalive treatment for having escaped from gaol, and two months for each theft, concurrent with the original sentence of four years. MAORI ENLISTMENT. Auckland, August fl. The Maori Appeal Board gave reserved decision on points raised claiming total exemption for Natives under the Treaty of Waitangi. The. board, consisting of Judge M'Corinick and two Maori colleagues, unanimously dismissed the appeal. The chairman said that Parliament, by the Military Service Act, 1916, declared thaj; the Natives of military age wore liable for compulsory service. Whether there was any remedy was entirely outside the functions of the board.
