New York, August 8. A German submarine sank a small American steamer in American waters. An armed y.ioht destroyed a submarine in the English Channel. She sighted a periscope, drove over the spot and dropped depth charges. She observed a disturbance in the middle of wMeh a 'H'ibfbling.indicated that volumes of air were escaping. She picked up the sole survivor of the submarine who was covered with oil. He died from internal injuries—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assn. DEFEATING GERMAN PIRACY. London, August 8. Mr. Archibald Furd, commenting on the Admiralty's shipping return, says that unless the Germans hit upon a more effective means of attack, which is always possible. the output of the shipyards will sinkings and, with the assistance of the American yards, defeat German piracy. As far as can be foreseen this is definite.—Aus.-N-Z.
