TRADE. TO SERVE THE EMPIU!:. Received August 9, 10.30 p.m. London, August 8. A deputation of the Empire Producers' Association waited on Mr. Hughes to urge the development of meat production within the Empire. Reliance for cheap food must rest upon Australia, New Zealand, and South America. The committee asked for a preferential scale of tonnage dues applicable only to British ships discharging at British ports, and thus give greater control over the destination of meat. A standard quality of meat should be established, with better co-ordination and organisation, to meet the huge American capitalistic competition, and should organise a continuous service of refrigerated, steamers to cover the whole of the Australian and New Zealand supplies. It was desirable that meat should bo handled in the freezing works and carried In BBritish ajtps, controlled by British capital, apd sold in the United Kingdom by firms. THE LONDON MARKETS. Distributions 111 all requirements, with the- jrasult that retailers who a few months ago gladly accepted whatever, quality was sent them, are now complaining because they have been allotted old, stored, third grade or pastry butter, while others are receiving spleodid New Zealand. The publication of tiri statistics suspended. Wheat and Flour: Nothing doinjf. In the absence of offerings, all quotations are nominally unchanged. Sugar: Unchanged.
