CORRESPONDENCE.
THE JERSEY COW. To tho Editor. Sir,—Evidently my friend Mr. .Wright is inclined to wander a bit when he sets out to try and bump the little Jersey and cannot get away from the so called official figures. Will he kindly say where I can lay my hands on the so called official figures? Mr Wright boldly accuses the Jersey of robbing the Holstcin, Shorthorn and Ayrshire of from 4d to Cd per lb. If this is correct, it would run into hundreds of thousands of pounds per annum, tind I am quite satisfied tlie breeders of these catytle would bury the hatchet ior-once and join together as one to put -» stop to this bare-faced rotbbery. No, Sir; we haye heaird this bark from the "froth and water" brigade long enough. You can quote what you like. You can make figures prove anything, especially when. you omit to mention how many lbs. of! milk it takes to make a pound of cheese, and you cannot get correct results unless you do know. But with it all, you cannot get away from the cardinal fact-, that ithe very foundWJ.on.JOif the>dairying industry rests on the (payment of the butter-fat in- tho-milk, whether it be for dried milk, cheese, Ihirfcter or casein, or* even town supply, so-that the only way my friend can stoop Hieing rolbiisd is by getting his so called "lazy" directors on vhe hop andl;putting-iip «, better scheme. —I am, etc., WIULIE J. FREEBE. Pukearuhe, sth. .August TAKANAKPS MILITARY DESERTERS. To-the Ed-tnr, May I" inquire tkwuCi tvourMKtlumns whether any effort; a, • being made to arrest the military deserters who were hiding in the Mt. Egmont National' Reserve, but who are now, it is freely asserted, lulled by the apathy and indifference of the authorities, are sitting: by the firesides of friendß and sympathisers, and doubtless will be reading this letter, along with tho latest war n'tvs, within a few hours of its publication, and possibly praying sincerely for its speedy termination. I can sarely say that if a reward of, say, £5 a head were offered the whole bunch would be gathered in within a week. If a determined effort had been made these menf could have been arrested months ago.—-I am, etc., HICKORY JIM.
