WESTERN FRONT.
THE RHEIMS-SOISSONS FRONT. 200 SQUARE MILES EVACUATED. Paris, August o. 'Sinoe Friday the Germans have retreated between seven and eight miles along the Rheims-Soissons front, evacua.ting nearly 200 square miles in 4S hours and leaving thousands of uuliuried dead, millions of rounds of artillery ammunition and vast quantities of other material. Critics consider that the withdrawal beyond the Vesle, together with retirement on the British front indicates Germany's decision definitely to abandon offensive tactics. The present battle has marked a complete change in the methods of warfare. The infantry can be seen inarching on the roads instead of creeping up tho communication trenches and saps and wriggling through barbed wire. Widely extended cavalry scouts precede the infantry, boldly spreading out over the fields and passing in an out of thickets, seefcui/g out enemy detachments and machine-gun nests.—Au3.N.Z.
