NEW PLYMOUTH BOROUGH COUNCIL SCHEME. ADDITIONAL WATER SUPPLY. Tiie electrical engineer to the New s Plymouth Borough Council (Mr. K'.' H. Bartley) submitted to the Works. Committee of the council last night a' J report on the proposals for additional Water supply at the Mangorei. The proposed extension einbraces*the following:—A storage reservoir, werr( across the Waiwakaiho River, a new. tunnel, enlarging the existing forebay,; additional pipe line from forebay to' and additional plant, etc.,. an power-hoase, etc. Speaking generally, the proposal is to draw from the Waiwakaiho at£the .present intake the fulkamount of water'allowed (9000 cubic feet per'minute) and, convey to. the forebay by inew ; ;tnnnel, which will supply ai,stor- : age reservoir, water taken. to 1&V fowbaylfco, «typn»n#sfcei

It, therefore, appears to me'that it may be necessary to adopt means other than the above to cope \&£h. the demand pending the carrying into ,effect of a scheme as above outlined, ana. ■with this objeetdn am submfitiijg separately a suggestion for the council's 'consideration. PROPOSALS APPRO\O2D. A detailed discussi«n of the 'Scbem» took place with, the electrical engineer, and finally the chairman of the Electric Light Committee (Cr. J. Clarke) advocated going-on with the proposal, if-only .the preliminary part of the scheme em■bodying the expenditure of £17,000, otherwise the council would have to discontinue supplying power, at least, in 'large quantities. He considered it was a good proposition to go to the ratepayers with, and in view of the 'possibilities of further development of local' industries, he moved that the engineer's schemo be approved, and that the Electric Light Committee be instructed. tt> •report upon the details in conneetion<with 'the proposals and formulate the neces-* sary resolution providing for carrying out the whole or any part of. the work. The motion waS'Seconded by Cr. Callia. Cr. Browne favored adopt inj -the 're•port so ; far as the scheme for the expen■diture:of the '£Ujooo was i oncenied. He Ithought that would be a safe undertaking, sand in. the meantime further*testa could be nmdeiof the minimum flowi-of ■water in the Waiwakaiho River. Ho 'suggested the.motion should be-amended fin that direction. i The. Mayor pointed, out that the'Elee- ■ ftric Light Committee would consider .whether the ,the scheme should s -be gone on with, and s then Rjoft , back to the-, council who world decide twhat should be done. If "the-motionaffts <amendedt»as suggested, the eommiitee gvouTd be tied-down to .considering only phat'vpart of-the expenditure 'of too £17,000. Cr. Dearc faworednthe "immediate-adop-"tfi>n«:ofifrthe wiiole scheme. On the motion being-put,-it was-car* ried iuianimously.
