DESTRUCTIVE. FIRE AT LOWER HUT; By Telegraph. —Press Association. Wellington, August 3. A fire broke out on l-he premises of the Westland Timber Company at Lower Hutt shortly after five o'clock last-night,. and'BP 'with great rapiditj', the pressure of waiter being defective.. The whole of the joinery and sawmill portion of the buildings was destroyed, also a large stosk of timber iaside. Thu loss is considerable as the plant was of a modern description. The amounit of the insurance--is noj; known in Wellington.
ALLEGED PROFITEERING Weliigton, August 3. A deputation from the Farmers' Union interviewed the Hon- Mr GuUirio coacerning profits allegedly made by privaltc dealers in Dominion products after subtraction of the Imperial Government's need 9. ' Tbe Minister said his sympathy was ■with the producers who favored an extension of tha comandeer. He would send the resolution of the conference to Mr Massey ad Sir Joseph Ward, also Mr Lvsnar's allegations with regard to profiteering. Mr Massey already had full knowledge of the matter in question. In reply tog a question regarding shipping, tha Minister said from his lending of cable messages received since Thursday (he deducted that the whole trend of tilings was to give one greater confidence than'could have b?.en traced in tiie messages in the preceding ten days.
