: FORECAST OF CASUALTIES. INCREASE OF DRAFT AGE, Received; 2, 5.5 p.m. Washington, Aug. 1. The forecasts of American casualties indicate that they are extremely heavy. Two hundred thousand were engaged in the Maine battle, whereof the losses exceed 12 per cent. _ The War Department is enlarging the incidence of the draft, and it ia esipected the draft age will be greatly increased—Press Assoc.
NOT ONE TRANSPORT SUNK. KAISER'S BOASH ANSWERED. Received Aug. 3, Id p.m. Washington, Aug. I. Answering the Kaisers boasts regarding the destruotiveness of the U-boat Warfare, Mr. Daniels announced that not a single United States or British transport conveying troops to Europe had been sunk.—Ans. FOURTH LIBERTY LOAN. Washington, Aug. 1. It is officially announced that the fourth Liberty Loan campaign will start on September 28 and end on October 19. The loan is for not less than six billion dollar?.—Aus. N.Z. Cable Assoc.
PREPARING FOR A LONG WAR. Washington, August 1. The Food Administrators, acting under the engagement between France, Italy, and the United States, have cabled to the United States Government from London as follows:
We cannot administer the food problem on the basis of one more year of war. We must prepare for its long continuance to ensure an absolute victory. The message adds: While increased production in the United States renders some relaxation of the restrictions possible, yet it is necessary that rigid economy and the elimination of waste be practised in the Allied countries and the United States.—Aua. CONTROL OF TELEGRAPHS AND TELEPHONES. Washington, Aug. I. The Government has assumed control of telephones and telegraphs as a war measure. They will be controlled by the postal department. There are approximately 22,000,000 miles of telephone wires and 2,800,000 milea of telegraph wires affected.
