COASTAL STEAMER ON FIRE.
By Telegraph. —Press Association. Wellington, August 2. A fire was discovered in the forehold of the small coastal steamer Defender, which was lying at the King's Wharf at 11 o'clock "this morning. The veSsql brought a general cargo from, Lyfctelton, and 'had loaded 1200 cases; of benzine for that port when the fire broke out. It is reported that two members of the crew were rather badly, burned. Efforts to subdue the outbreak were unsuccessful, and for the safety, of other vessels it was deemed advisable to tow her out into the harbor. Flames and dense volumes of smoke were coming up from below decks, and th« steamer, apparently was doomed. The Defender was built of woai, at Kingcumber, N.S.W., in 1901, and is owned by the Westland Shipping Co. She, is a vessel of 185 tons, Later. About 1 o'clock the Defender, drifted on to the roeka at the north end Somes Island, where (he is burning; foriously. At half-past 1 there vu a big explosion. i
