DISTRICT NEWS.

JVH&REROA. (From Our Own Correspondent.) The Social Hall at Whareroa was crowded with local residents and visitors from all round last Tuesday evening, when a euchre party, followed by a dance, was held in aid of the Hall funds. Cards were indulged in until ten o'clock, when the prize winners proved to be, ladies: Miss Pickup 1, Misses Burton 2,' and booby prize respectively, gent's: Mr E. Death 1, Mr. A. Meuli 2, and Mr. \V. Nicholas booby. The floor was then cleared for dancing, the music being supplied by Mrs Benton, while extras were played by Mr Murphy, violin. Messrs Richard and B. Bloor capably carried out the duties of M.C. As usual the Whareroa ladies provided an excellent supper. Mr R. Hicks (chairman of the Hall Committee) announced that there would be a dance held at Whareroa shortly; also that a church service would take place here on Sunday afternoon (the war anniversary). i The local factory opened on Friday morning, the 26th. Entering the Whareroa Hall one is most favorably struck with a prominent notice to the effect that no spirituous liquors are allowed inside or outside the Whareroa Hall, which means that one and all can gather at functions here without fear of seeing or hearing anything offensive. ManjJ country bails catering for amusement would' benefit by, following this wise example.

NORFOLK ROAD. (Prom a Correspondent). In the Norfolk School on Friday, July 20th, a farewell social was tendered to a very highly respected resident of the district in the person of Mr J. W. Burgess, who is now farming at Tarata. A very enjoyable evening was spent. Mr Marshall, on behalf of the people of the district, presented the popular "Joe" with a case of pipes, and, in the course of his remarks, referred to the many good qualities of the guest, and of his untiring assistance in regard to school and patriotic matters. Mr Burgess suitably responded. Miss Hqigan supplied excellent music, and extras were capably rendered by MisseajJ Laurence and Smart.
