His Worship the Mayor and, Messrs O'Dea and Welsh made a journey in order to interview tho Minister, and, though their efforts were not successful, [ shall always remember with pride and gratitude their kindness in undertaking the labor they did. I have very much to bo thankful for. I am, as far as 1 know, in perfect health. Hawera has been beneficent to me- I can still put up a record for fast traveling. My energy and mental a«tivity have not suffered by age so far. My chief anxiety is to know how best to avoid sinking into premature gloth and ease. I lyive not had time to consider what 1 shall do in the immediate future. I trust that you and the district will enjoy the blessings of peace and prosperity. You deserve them. I have striven—and, I hope, succeeded—in doing equal justice to all- I have been ably assisted by Mr. Morgan, the clerk of the court, who I have always found staunch, loyal, and efficient, and his assistant (Mr Fves) has ably assisted him. My thanks are due to the justices who have assisted in discharging magisterial duties in my absence. I thank the police for the manner in which they have performed their task in the administration of justice. I hope to enjoy life and active occupation for some years to come, and if the Hon.
