TARANAKI JOCKEY OLUB. \ 'i ANNUAL MEETING. ■The annual meeting of the Taranaki „ Jockey Club was held last night. Mr. A. Nolan, chairman of committee presided ovojf an attendance of about 40 members. CHAPMAN'S REPORT. The chairman, in his annual report, congratulated members on the satisfactory results during the past year. Owing to the reduction of racing permits, , there were only three days' races instead of four, and' this naturally had resulted in a reduction of profit, which was, roughly, £IOOO gross. Against this, • however, must be set £717 for Improvements—viz., £617 for alterations to the •' totalisator-liouse, made necessary'by the ever-increasing crowds attending the meetings, particularly at Christmas timow - * It was also found necessary to erect ai new judge's box at a cost of £IOO. Tha ■ ■' sum of £l5O had been written off 3>uild> ■ings, thus leaving a net profit of fililiCC. ' The stakes given for the Christmas meefy ing were increased by £255 and for thd February meeting by £220, as compulsed! \ with previous years. The gates and, to* talisetor receipts showed a 'marked lh> - provement. ■ During the year the committee revised the club's rules, end they; had every reason to feel satisfied witj(L the result achieved. Books, will be> posted to members in the ootuqe of ai few days. TJnforfunately, there wereuoj certain indications that the war waii neardng an end. The general policy c$ , the club had been to carry out only ias ■ prorements that were absolutely netted sary. For some time the increasfog traffic into and out of the racecourse had; cause some anxiety, and it was thought; that steps should he token to ensure pan per control of the traffic on the.clus?j! property. A syatera, had been inaugai rated at the February meeting, and Jtri - success was so apparent that it was dSw aided, to construct a drive on the earn© lines. As it was necessary to increase} parking accommodation for members sad private cars, arrangements had been' made with the Puketara Park Boqzdl for a piece of groimdimmedsase!yßfc tiha rear of the custodian's cottage, and upon; this a new bungalow would be erected 1 ; disposing of the old house to the best! advantage, and utilising the section tin! freed for a car paddock. It was a&oj proposed to make some altei&tiOna at fiaij tea kiosk. He tendered his thanks toj the comnrittee for their hearty tion during the past year. He afeo paSC a tribute to the good work performea ■by the secretary (Mr. E. P. Webster)* who had the interests of the club ati heart, also to the custodian (Mr. Blew man), who was wjjfoout doubt the righiß man for the position. He then moved: the adoption of fHSreport. Mr. P- Orlbell seconded. In reply to Mr. Emeny it was stated that the refreshment booth realised £225. Mr. Watson took exception to the' - committee having voted £IOO towards the High School Citizens'' Committee. It was quite right that the club should contribute to patriotic funds, but he did not see that there was any call for them to contribute to the High School particularly as the school had had the use of the club's buildings free of cost. The High School was a very deserving institution, and the individual members of the club should support it to the best of theii ability, but he did not think that the funds of the club should be voted for that purpose. The chairman stated thai the commit* tee felt that the club, which was now getting on its feet, was a town institra :tien, and should help the town wherever possible. The High School was a credit to the town, and a great advertisement, The committee sympathised with thd board in the strong and unsuccessful fight it had put up to obtain a grant from the Government to complete the scheme, and felt that it deserved gupSi port. Accordingly the money was nnan* •imously voted by the committee. The report was adopted. ALLOCATION OP PROFITS, ' Mr. W. G. Emeny thought the cohk mittee should expend money in improve ing its track, which he described as*.a' disgrace, The stakes also should be-in creased. The chairman stated that the track' ■, would be attended to. It was the intention of the committee to fence the course and stock it with sheep. The committee was authorised to,de< v 1 .vote the balance of last year's profits to any patriotic funds they may deem ' fit, } It waa resolved to vote, the band [£s H 1 ELECTION OF OFFICERS. f Officers were elected as follows: Presi-t 6 dent, Hon. O. Samuel, M.L.C. (re-elect- I ed); vice-president, Mr. Newton King J (re-elected); trustees, Messrs. Newton I King, W. L. Newman and A. H. Standish; I ' treasurer, Mr. W. C. ' ', It was resolved to recommend ths committee to consider improving tho j stakes and improving the beach; that it be a recommendation to the incoming committee to delete the Taranuki Stakes from the programme a? tho earliest op- ; portunity, or, failing this, to insert on the first day of the autumn meeting a handicap race of not less than £2OO for two- and three-year-olds, or such.a raco as is likely to induce a larger field to start in the Taranaki Stakes than has been the case hitherto. A Sydnsy cable states that the scratching? for the A..1.C- Derby include Pontoon and in the Metropolitan Handicap Football.
