HAWERA MOTOR FATALITY.
CAE DRIVER BEFORE THE COURT!,. .(From Our Own Correspondent.) Hawera, July 25, AH kinds of wild rumors wore afloat In town to-day regarding tlie person responsible for the death of Mr. Thomas Henry Morgan, who was killed by a motor-car on Wednesday ■evening on the South Road. All doubts were set aside late this afternoon when a well-known farmer of Inaha, James O'Donnell, gave hiraseif up to the police &s being the driver of the ear which knocked the old man down. Accused was brought before Mr. W. R. Haselden, S.M., on a charge of unlawfully killing Thomas Henry Morgan. In reply to the Magistrate, Senior- ► Sergeant Till said accused had given himself lip to the police and had made a voluntary statement. Sergeant Till applied for a remand until Monday nest to enable the police to obtain evidence. The remand was granted, bail being fixed at accused in £IOO , and one other surety of £IOO. Bail was forthcoming. Tlie deceased was a well-known and li'ghly-rcspected settler in the Hawera district, having resided Qiere for over 30 years. He was a Maori war veteran, and in 1868 was attached to the Kai Iwi cavalry, which was under" the command |of the late Captain Bryce. He also had a varied experience in the na»y, and his sea yarns were of a very interesting nature. It was with great pride that he told of a middy who was on his ship and subsequently became Sir John Fisher, First Sea Lord of the Admiralty. Deceased also took a very active interest in the formation in Hawer»i of a branch of the National Defence League, and although his ripe old age prevented him from taking part in the route marches ho very rarely missed a parade. He is survived by a widow and four daughters, two of whom are in Taranaki—Mrs. A. C. St. Paul, New Plymouth, and Mrs. R. j Martin, Hawera—and they have the sincere sympathy of all in their sad bereavement. The only son was killed at the Gallipoli landing. The funeral will take place at 2 p.m. on Saturday. An inquest 'was opened this morning before Mr. W. R. Haselden, S.M., when, after evidence of identification had been taken, an adjournment for further evidence was made until 10 o'clock on Monday morning.
