Mr. Thomas Tanner died on Monday at H&velock Xorth, aged SS, from com* plications following an operation kst week. He arrived in New Zealand in 1850,* took up land in Hawke's Bay in 1853, and resided there up till the time of his death. He ■was member for Wfti* p&wa (1887-90), and was "a keen supporter of the Atkinson Government. He was also a great worker in local affairs, and for many years a member of local bodies. He lied recently Ibeen the chief pillar of the Y.MC.A. Mr. Tanner had a family of eight, many of whom are married and reside in Hawke's Bay. A recent casualty list reports lieutenant. Salmond "missing, bellevad killed." He is a son of Sir John Salmond, and in his 26th year. At the .outbreak of the war he was an undergraduate at Cambridge University, studying law. A fortnight after relations were (broken between Germany and Great Britain, Mr. Salmond enlisted With the 9th Lancers, English cavalry. He transferred .to tlie New Zealand Infanltry afterwards. During the earlier stages of the war he was gassed, and subsequent* ly wounded. Having recovered from his wounds, he returned to the front three months ago.'r 3 Lieutenant Salmond was born in New Zealand, hut received the earlier part <yf his education in Adelaide. Later lie continued his studies at Wellington College. From that institution he proceeded to Victoria University College, and for a time was connected with the firm of Messrs SkeTreitt, Tripp, and BWiyinf thai city.
