HAWERA.
(From Our Own Correspondent.) ' Hawera, July 2,j. Considerable e\'cite'ment was caused at the corner of Union Street and High Street at raid-day to-day through a young ladv named Miss Lees, of Eltham, being knocked down by a motor bicycle ridden by James Alexander Smith. It appears that the young lady, who was accompanied by a child, was crossing the roarl. In making sure of the safety of the child Miss Lees hesitated, stood for a moment, and thus baffled the cyclist, and unfortunately the machine collided with her, knocking her down. Fortunately, Miss Lees escaped with a severe shaking. In the latest list of casualties appears the name of Private David Hut ton. an ex-Havvera lad, who is reported to have died of wounds. Deceased was a motor mechanic bv trade, and was for upwards of four years in the employ of Mr. George Hutchinson, of Hawera. He was a deservedly popular young man, and bis death came as a great shock to his many friends here.
