BOROUGH COUNCIL.
I WORKS COMMITTEE. The Works Committee of the New l'lvmoutli Borom;)i Council met lust night. Uis Worship the Mayor (Mr C. 11. Burgess) presided, and there were also present: Crs. G. W. Browne, Li. J. Deare, W. A. Collis, E. Griffiths. W. "F. Short, F. J. Hill, J. W. Jiayden and J. Clarke. SPEED OF MOTOR TRAFFIC. The town clerk of Tugk-wood wrote respecting uniform action on the part of all borough councils in Tarauaki with regard to the speed limit for motor traffic through boroughs. During a discussion on the loiter, the difficulty of making a uniform speed, on account of the varying conditions in different towns, was mentioned, and it was urged that the most that could be done would be to fix a general limit for motor traffic in the main streets of each borough. Jt was finally resolved to reply that the council could not see its way clear to support the suggestion, being of opinion that each municipality must lis its own speed limits. INTERNMENT OF ALIENS. The Gisborne Borough Council wrott asking for support to a resolution urging upon the Government the internment of all enemy aliens, without exception, during the period of the war, and to utilise their services in a manner which will return value to the State. The Mayor said he did not think the Borough Council was called upon to enter such a political controversy. If, however, the citizens of New Plymouth desired to express their opinions on such a subject, and approached him for an opportunity of doing so, he would be quite willing to call a public meeting for that purpose. • The letter wa3 received. BOEOUGH LIGHTING. The streets sub-eommittee reported having inspected street lights in various parts of the borough, and made the following recommendations: That all lights in Kawaroa Park and East End Reserve be charged to the reserves vote instead of to streets, as at present; that the electrical engineer be instructed to endeavor to arrange that all the street lights in the East End Reserve, with the exception of the one alongside the river at the Autere Street entrance, be switched on from the pavilion, and only used when there is some function in the reserve; that similar arrangements bo made in regard to the lights in Kawaroa Park; that the light outside the baths be connected with the bath lighting, and only used on special occasions; that the light at the junction of Barrett Street and Mt. Edgecumbe Street be transferred to the junction of West and Barrett Streets.. The report was adopted. GENERAL. Authority was given to the engineei | to sell turf, at his own discretion, where application was made for same. Messrs. Derby and Co. were given permission to store benzine in a shed o.'i Mr. T. V. Simon's property, Vogeltown Permission was given to the architect for the improvements to the entrance tc the Tarauaki Jockey Club's racecourse to extend the kerbing for one chair along John Street, and also to form th< footpath. Win. Hoaly wrote drawing attentioi to the state of the entrance to Normal Street, Vogeltown, and asked that some thing be done at once to make it pass able.—The engineer reported that thi streets sub-committee had authorised th< work, but that continual bad wcathe had hindered its being carried out. In reference to the borough's enter prise in pig-farming, some fear was ex pressed by others engaged in simila work that their present sources of sup ply of pig feed were to be cut off. i report from the inspector stated tha such was not the case, and that, provide refuse was removed in a proper and sat isfactory manner, no one now colleetin pig feed would be in the least way intei fered with.
