' SIX O'CLOCK CLOSING. . Brisbane, July 20. In the Assembly, Mr Bayly, submitted a motion in favor of six o'clock closing of hotels. JAPANESE TRADE WITH AUSTRALIA. Sydney, July 20. As showing the expansion of Japanese trading in Australia since the war it is stated that is 1913 Australia imported £436,000 -worth of Japanese soft goods and in 1917 the value amounted to £1,561,000, with a growing increase for the current year.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assoc. GAMBLING AND PATRIOTIC FUNDS. Melbourne, July 20. The Repatriation Committee has decided to prohibit the use of spinning wheels and other devices of a gambling nature in connection wjth patriotic funds. The action is dictated by the growth of the gambling element. GOLD PRODUCTION. London, July 19. A meeting of Australian and New Zealand gold producers appointed a committee to draw up their case, giving particuars of mines closed and decrease of output. They deputed Sir Newton Moore to present it to Messrs Hughes and Massey, and request them to urge Mr Bonar Law to grant an in-quiry.—Aus.-N.Z. Cable Assoc.
