Mackdow and Mr. and Mrs. D. Teed, who have been on a short visit to New Plymouth, have returned to Auckland. Miss B. Rennell is on a visit to Rotorua. * Miss Valentine-Smith, who has been the guest of Mrs. F. G. Harvie, has returned to Palmerston North. Mrs. and Miss Heather (Auckland) are staying at Chatsworth House. * # # # Mrs. H. Miller and family, who have been living at Omata for some time past, are now residing in New Plymouth. GENERAL. Masked Fancy Dress Ball.—The last gay and gorgeous scenes of the Cafe Chantant, which has been holding full sway in the Coronation Hall during the past week, were brought to a close with a masked fancy dress ball last Monday evening, which was thoroughly enjoyed by all those present, even if the itn were in the minority. The costume worn by some of the ladies, representing characters of the sterner sex,- were so well carried out that, unless they were closely inspected, they could not be detected. Amongst those present were: Miss Edwards (Jo.'kcy). Miss Jordan (Pierrot), Miss Gilbert (Dutch Boy), Miss Anthony (Little Girl), Miss M. Corkill (Maorilt Miss X. Oorkill (Japanese Lady), Miss If. Burgess, Mesdames Morley, P. Webster, G. Xeal, G. Fraser, L. Webster, Misses Brewster, Greatbach, S. Thomson, Fox, Bennett, Openshaw, Andrews, Cameron, Atkinson, Hurley (2), Sole, Godfrey, Pardie, B. King, Alexander. The Mayoress wishes to thank Mrs. Blackburn for a gift of pumpkins, and a friend for a sack of parsnips to send to our men in camp. " Captain Hartnell has informed the Mayoress that mittens will be a most acceptable gift for the man on active service, and should be sent during August. Mrs. Burgess will be very pleased to give wool to those who are willing to make these for the Christmas parcels which will be packed at the depot next month. Christmas cakes and sweets will also be most acceptable. MARRIAGE. A wedding of much interest was celebrated in Wellington this week, when Miss Janet Ola Stout, daughter of the Chief Justice (Sir Robert Stout) and Lady Stout, was married to Captain Trevor Holmden, M.C., of the Worcestershire Regiment, son of Mr; Holmden, of Kelburn. Captain Holmden left New Zealand with the Main Body, N.Z.E.F., and has served with distinction in Gallipoli and Mesopotamia. The ceremony was performed by the Bishop of Wellington, assisted by the Rev. Kempthorne. The bridesmaid was Sister Cronin, of the Napier Hospital, who wore a navy blue costume and black velvet hat, and carried a bouquet of violets. The two children of Mrs. Webb (sister of the bridegroom) also attended the bride, the little girl wearing white muslin with a blue sash and black velvet hat, and the boy in Scout uniform. Mr. Thorne George was the best man, and Dr. Kington Fyffe presided at the organ. A reception was held after the ceremony by Sir Robert and Lady Stout at their home on The Terrace. Only the relatives of the bride and bridegroom were present, and a few old friends, including Sir John Findlay. Miss McDonald, matron of Xapier Hospital, where the bride received her training as a nurse, was also present. The wedding was a violet one, the table being decorated with these flowers, which also appeared on the wedding eake. The bride and bridegroom left for their honeymoon in a car decorated with the Union Jack, Scottish and New Zealand flags, while a returned soldier, in uniform, wa sthe chaull'uer. Captain Holmden, who is on furlough, returns shortly to the front.
