THE MT. MESSENGER ROAD.
' DEPUTATION TO MINISTER. WORK TO BE DONE. By Telegraph.—Our Correspondent. Wellington, Last Night. A deputation, consisting of the Hon. 0. Samuel, Messrs. W. T. Jennings, M.P., Morgan (Mayor of Waitara), Piggott (chairman of Clifton County Council). Jones (member of County Council).. Johnston (mail contractor), interviewed the Minister of Public Works re metalling the main road, particularly over Mt. Messenger. They all spoke strongly over the condition of the road, whieH, the mail contractor said, was impassable in many places. Mr. Jennings introduced the deputation, stating that the settlers were becoming disheartened, and number* had sold out. A strong case for consideration was made out by Messrs. Samuel and Pigott. The Minister made a lengthy reply, stating that he had instructed the district engineer to prepare plans of work, and he would give as much money as could be obtained from the Minister of Finance. If there was any difficulty about labor, he would place a number of Jugo-Slavs on the work, as he recognised that no further delay should take place when weather conditions admitted of the work being proceeded with.
